Ditto that. I have the 8x96 DAC and love
it. It's an unbelievable deal for the money.

Agreed, and you can safely omit the qualifier "for the money." I think it is
simply one of the best sounding DAC's, end of story. Same for the 8x96 ADC.

Michal,
() The DAC continues to behave perfectly and sound great. I'm always sure to
tell anyone who is looking for a multichannel DAC that they're crazy if the
don't look at the 8x96.
Best regards,
Glenn Z

I'd second this. I love my Mytek W24, but my 8X96 demo has me lusting for a set
fulltime.
At the moment I'm trying to qualify my Sonic HDSP system for production work...
Once I have a functional DAW, I'll be able to get serious about 96K multichannel
conversion. The 8X96 are currently at the top of a very short list for my
purposes.
The best thing I can say about them: they are among the most neutral sounding
converters I've experienced. My favorite test is to convert an analog source to
digital and back on the insert side of my console, and switch between source and
output of the loop...
My old Workstation 24 is pretty transparent in this test, but the 8X96 is even
better. Its at the point where I'm not sure I could reliably identify source
from conversion blind... in fact what differences I do hear exist when I pass
signal through the same loop through my analog Sontec EQ in bypass mode (no eq
but a few meters of wire running near power supplies).
For capturing music in the studio, color in convertors can be a good thing...
indeed I think older apogee's color actually helps on some rock records as a
creative choice. But in mastering, this kind of performance is almost the holy
grail ()

Have only A/B'ed versus my existing Mytek W24 at 44.1 and a 2 channel Finalizer
96K's AD/DA, but I consider the performance of the demo Mytek 8X96 to be
wonderful. It's easy to use, comes with a variety ofi/o formats for connecting
to workstations and MDMs, and it sounds great.
Specifically, the analog section's impulse response (something my Dunlavey SC-IVa's
are particularly picky about) is stunning. Transients are clear, crisp and
noticeably tighter than the other 2 convertors at all bit depths and SRs. The
low end is where the biggest differences show up. The bottom is tighter, yet
noticeably fuller than the others. The Finalizer is decidedly a "warm" convertor,
and is actually a nice flavor for coloring rock mixes... the 8X96 is not warm in
the same way, but more just more filled out and bigger on the bottom. You hear
details in the bottom octave that just aren't there on the others. Very nice!
The high end is smooth and clear. Not at all brittle. I demo'ed an apogee PSX
awhile back, and was impressed with the improvements in the high end over
previous models, and found it less colored than other 2 channel apogees.
()
The thing that sticks out in my mind however is the bottom and transient
response of the 8X96DAC: I noticed things with the 8X96 that I didn't with the
PSX. Also, the difference in performance at 44.1/48Khz between the 8X96 and the
Mytek seems greater.
What I can say objectively is that my Sonic HDSP workstation displays clock
frequency and in "normal" mode has a too-narrow jitter window. The 8X96ADC
provides the most stable clock in my studio. When locked to the ADC, the 8X96DAC
sounds great. I did many listening tests feeding the ADC from analog 1/4"
source, then directly to each DAC. In fact, the Finalizer96's DAC sounds better
fed by the Mytek ADC. ()
Hope this helps,
Dave Davis

Michal,
I'm really pleased with the sound quality of the 8x96! Just what I was hoping
for. It runs quite hot, but that's according to design I'm sure. It's behaved
flawlessly since I got it back week before last. Very transparent sound, love it
with Great River preamp (balanced) and Oktavas on acoustic guitar. Haven't tried
vocals yet.

Jon Duvick

We had the opportunity to evaluate the W24 alongside offerings from Apogee, TC,
Sony, as well as some audiophile convertors. The W24 was the unanimous choice of
our engineers and everyone else who listened. At this point I'm writing for some
final info on configuration and pricing, as well as some questions about the
9624.
(...)
What makes this critical is the quality of your product. Frankly while I can
hear differences in amps and consoles, nothing short of speaker changes have
made as radical a difference in sound as your convertors. They are a revelation.
While other convertors shine brightly in some genre's and styles of music, none
were as consistently accurate, solid and responsive as the W24 (TC and Apogee
products had a very "warm" tonality that sounded nice on rock, but masked detail
in the low mids... they fell apart with some jazz and classical pieces).
Problems in imaging and localization were instantly recognizable. Phase holes
were obvious. For mastering such precision is a necessity.
Good job, and great product...

I recently picked up your workstation 24 (issue 1 0137). I just finished
mastering the album at Sterling Sound with Ted Jensen, and we are very happy with
the depth and detail we captured onto DA-88 with a Rane Paq-rat.It was very
noticeable when comparing to 16 bit dat recorded thru an Apogee AD-1000 using
UV-16.
